Brings Endometriosis Foundation of America's Message
to Michigan State University
Women’s Health Symposium: A Focus on Endometriosis
World-renowned Endometriosis of America (EFA) Founder Tamer Seckin, MD, addressed leaders within the medical research community at A Women’s Health Symposium: A Focus on Endometriosis, presented by Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Followed by co-presenters Grace Janik, MD and Bruce Lessey, Ph.D., MD, Dr. Seckin opened the Symposium with his Keynote Lecture, Endometriosis Surgery for Multiple Organ Involvement, which focused on the pathogenesis and scientific perspectives of endometriosis.
The evening preceding the Symposium, in partnership with Inforum, internationally known actress, super-model, award winning cookbook author, host of Bravo’s Emmy Award-winning series, Top Chef and EFA Co-Founder, Padma Lakshmi, was the keynote speaker at Inforum West Michigan’s spring dinner event at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Grand Rapids. At the dinner, Lakshmi shared her story of how she started her career as an international model, and evolved into the multi-faceted businesswoman she is today—her presentation, Live Well…Give Back, also exemplifies her work with the EFA. The next day, following the Symposium research-related presentations, Lakshmi also spoke about endometriosis from a personal perspective, leading a presentation titled, My Battle with Endometriosis: A Personal Odyssey.
The Michigan State University – College of Human Medicine is home to a $6.8 million NIH-funded Specialized Cooperative Centers Program for Reproductive and Infertility Research which focuses on translational research on the etiology and pathophysiology of endometriosis. Led by Dr. Asgi Fazleabas, Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology and an internationally recognized expert on endometriosis and infertility, this center has done cutting edge research in developing animal models and in vitro systems to better understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms, which may be associated with the pathology of endometriosis and develop non-invasive diagnostic tests that are so desperately needed for the early diagnosis of the disease.
EFA is a nonprofit organization focused on fighting against the devastating effects of a disease that affects millions of women and adolescent girls. Through increased awareness, education, research and legislative advocacy, the EFA is committed to improving affected individuals' lives by early detection and treatment.
