Sexy Food - 5 Foods To Get You In The Mood For Love

By Ted Boedeker

We all know about the aphrodisiac properties of foods like oysters and we've watched food play a central theme in risqué movies like 9 1/2 Weeks, but what are the foods we should be eating to get ourselves 'in the mood' for love? Well, there are many food types that we could list here - some of them have genuine chemical properties that enhance our libido whilst others are quite simply just playful. Here I've listed my top 5 favourite 'sexy foods' and these are packed with health benefits too. What could be better - foods that arouse your desires whilst being good for you at the same time!

Asparagus: Asparagus is a member of the Lily family and contains high levels of potassium, fibre and vitamin A, B6 and C. It also contains thiamine and folic acid. Whilst folic acid is most often associated as an important part of the diet for pregnant women, it boosts the histamine levels of both sexes enhancing the orgasm. In France 200 years ago asparagus was served to bridegrooms on the eve of their wedding and has been regarded as "lustful food" for centuries.

Avocados: There's something wonderfully feminine and voluptuous about the shape of avocados along with its soft buttery flesh that make this an incredibly sensual fruit. But it is also has historical associations with male sexuality. Ancient tribes in South America referred to the avocado tree as the "Testicle Tree" due to the shape of the fruit. Like asparagus, avocados contain high levels of folic acid and potassium - the ideal food to get 'in the mood.'

Chocolate: It's often said that chocolate is a substitute for sex. Nothing could be further from the truth - in fact chocolate should make you want to have more sex! We're talking about dark chocolate here because, unlike milk chocolate, it contains high levels of cocoa. It also contains theobromine which, like caffeine, is a powerful stimulant. We feel happy after eating chocolate because it helps our brains release serotonin. Dark chocolate has health benefits too - it has high levels of antioxidants which have anti-ageing properties and are good for the heart.

Eggs: Of course for thousands of years eggs have been regarded as a fertility symbol and it was believed that eating raw eggs increased your sexual desire. Eggs contain high levels of vitamin B5 and B6 which help to balance hormones and reduce stress levels. In Europe peasant farmers cracked eggs of their ploughs to encourage a healthy crop whilst brides used to crack an egg on steps of their new home and wish for a large family. Caviar is perhaps regarded as the sexiest of all eggs - when it bursts on you r tongue it releases high levels of zinc and proteins which as thought to stimulate the libido and give a longer life.

Figs: Figs are said to resemble the vagina - in fact in Italy, because of the shape of the fruit, the word "figa" is used as a sexual euphemism for the female genitalia. The soft, ruby-red flesh of the fig creates erotic images in the mind long before actually tasting the fruit! To arouse all the right emotions, try serving figs drizzled in honey with a little soft goats cheese. Delicious!
