A summer wine is a light wine meant to be enjoyed during the hot Summer months. It is refreshing, light enough to keep from weighing the drinker down and well suited to lighter summer foods. Generally a Summer wine is simple. fresh, fruity and sweet, and is low in tannins and other factors that can cause a wine to feel heavy.
While most people think of a cool glass of white wine on a hot Summer day, the right red can also be refreshing and light. Some of the more popular varieties of summery wines as Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or Syrah. A popular alternative to these wines is a fruit wine, including those made from such berries as strawberries, blackberries or raspberries.
One more point to keep in mind : Summer wines don't have to be paired as stringently with food as one might normally think. A light white wine can be a lovely accompaniment to a hamburger or a steak on the patio.
