Beckham to Return to the Galaxy Later this Month

Right now, David Beckham is overseas keeping up on his fitness by training with the Hotspurs but the LA midfielder is expected to be back at the Galaxy later this month.

When asked about being concerned with David's absence, Captain Landon Donovan had this to say: "I would normally say yeah, but every year we’ve spent significant time without David, whether it’s been injuries or he’s been away. This team knows how to gel quickly and David conversely does a good job of coming into the team. The expectation is to have him back relatively soon.”

Just when Beckham is supposed to return is unknown, even to Galaxy officials. “He'll be back this month, the exact date we haven't finalized but he'll be back in February,” said Galaxy coach Bruce Arena.

Beckham’s only full season thus far has been 2008, the only one of his four full campaigns where he did not seek out a loan. After spending the first half of 2009 and 2010 with AC Milan, Beckham unsuccessfully sought out a loan to Spurs this January.

While the deal never materialized, Donovan said he would not expect Beckham to return with any negativity. “He has never been that kind of guy who is going to moan. When he’s here, he wants to play, he wants to win. I’m sure the day he gets back here he’s going to be ready to go.”

Meanwhile, Arena said Beckham’s offseason needs were met even if he isn’t around to start the preseason with the Galaxy. “One thing he needed was, he needed a break. He worked real hard just to get back on the field last year coming off his Achilles injury. I think he needed some time away from the game. Then he also needed a slow buildup into the season and I think he's getting that.”

In related news, the Galaxy will be unveiling their regular season schedule for 2011 on February 10th.

Galaxy Denies Beckham Once Again

David Beckham’s stint with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur descended further into farce on Thursday when the England midfielder was barred from playing in a training game.

The Galaxy took a hard line from the outset, insisting that under the terms of his contract – which only has one season left – he must report back in California for preseason training on Feb. 10.

Now Major League Soccer’s most famous team has taken things a step further by refusing to allow the 35-year-old to take part in a practice match against squad players from second-tier English team Queens Park Rangers.

However, according to sources close to the club and a report in the Guardian newspaper, the Galaxy told Tottenham that Beckham did not have permission to take the field due to an ongoing insurance dispute. The two parties have not been able to agree on who should pay the insurance premium that protects the Galaxy against financial loss if he is injured.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp told the English media last week that Beckham had been given the all-clear to take part in full practice games. “(Beckham) can just join in and train properly,” Redknapp told the Guardian’s David Hytner.

Beckham’s spokesman Simon Oliveira claimed early on Friday that the player had not planned to take part in the training game, and had no interest in doing so.

David Joins Up with the Tottenham Hotspurs

Tottenham Hotspur is delighted to announce that England’s most capped outfield player, David Beckham will train with the First Team squad.

David will train with the Club until February 10 when he will be required to return to LA Galaxy ahead of the start of the MLS season.

Manager Harry Redknapp said: “David is a fantastic professional – he will be a great influence around the place and I am sure we will all benefit from his winning mentality. I think everyone will enjoy having him here.”

We’d love to have him here for longer but respect his commitments to LA Galaxy. They wanted him back in early February so that made it difficult to do a playing deal on the basis of three weeks. “

David Beckham said: “It’s important that I maintain a high level of fitness during the MLS off season. I’m thankful to Tottenham and Harry Redknapp for giving me the opportunity to train with the team over the next month. I’m grateful to the LA Galaxy for allowing to me to train with Spurs. I look forward to getting to work as soon as possible.”
