Hot Hairstyles: French, Fishtails and Ropes (and Feathers)
Do you know what French, fishtails, and ropes have in common? They are all a type of braiding style! Hair braiding comes back in style once every ten years or so, and this year it has been a huge hit. And just in time for the summer! Read on for an overview of French braids, fishtail braids, and rope braids!
French braids are fancier and wider than regular three-strand braids because they start out with three but incorporate more strands from the sides. One popular variety of this style is the headband-like French braid. It helps to keep hair out of the face but also looks polished. Plus, it can be dotted with Grecian or Bohemian overtones, especially with the long, flowery dresses that are trendy this summer. You can often spot Jennifer Aniston, Lauren Conrad, Nicole Richie, and Rachel Bilson sporting this look on and off the red carpet.
Fishtail braids are wider and flatter than French braids. They really do look like fish tails! And they only require two big strands, which are gradually separated into multiple strands. Luckily you can do this style by yourself because as you are creating the look you always have only two strands in each hand at any given moment. This style of braiding is popular as a side braid; however, medium to long hair is highly recommended. Lots of celebrities have sported this look recently, including Rihanna, Fergie, and Kim Kardashian. Whether this braid involves one ponytail or two, the look is very sexy.
Rope braids are a little more difficult to do on your own, since they require you to twist in an unusual fashion, but it is worth it because it's a very elegant look. Celebrities like wearing this style up, to the side, or as a ponytail. Selena Gomez and Lauren Conrad sported this look in recent months.
Overall, all kinds and styles of braiding have taken over this season since they are so chic and easy to create. However, the biggest surprise hairstyle of the season has been FEATHERS! No one would have thought that feathers would go well with hair, other than seeing it on Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, but it totally does! Whether it is Bohemian-chic or punk rock, feathers have been the "it" thing this season.
After seeing Steven Tyler sporting the look during American Idol's 2011 season, you would have never thought that it would become a trend, but surprisingly it did. Nowadays, feather extensions can be spotted almost everywhere you go!
Since these extensions are handmade and heat and water resistant they are as easy to take care of as hair. There are plain ones, multicolor ones, long ones, and short ones. Styles include having one feather extension, to having as many as you have highlights! But the most popular style is having about three feathers placed near the side of the ears. Feather extensions are so trendy that hair salons have actually had to stock up on fishing line and feathers just to keep up with the booming demand!
